Sailing Toward Success: NSLS Empowers Madang Maritime Cadets to ‘Sevim Moni’ for a Brighter Future!

NSLS Brings ‘Sevim Moni, Stretim Sindaun’ to Madang Maritime College.

The Nambawan Savings and Loan Society (NSLS) recently visited the Papua New Guinea Maritime College (PNGMC) to empower staff and cadets to take control of their financial futures. Through a member sign-up drive and an educational awareness session, the NSLS team promoted the popular ‘Sevim Moni, Stretim Sindaun’ initiative, proving that financial independence is a vital trend for today’s young professionals.

With a large portion of the maritime workforce under age 40, NSLS highlighted how digital banking and smart saving habits seamlessly integrate into a seafaring career. The team demonstrated that consistently saving a small portion of a fortnightly salary leads to significant long-term rewards. An NSLS representative noted that while maritime work is demanding, the goal is to ensure young professionals have a “money pile” ready to fund a home or a business when they return to shore.

As many maritime workers are already Nambawan Super members for retirement, NSLS serves their short-term financial needs, effectively making NSL (Nambawan Super) branches a “one-stop shop” for both long-term and short-term financial solutions.

During the visit, staff and students joined a nationwide community of over 66,000 members by opening accounts on the spot. NSLS explained that after 12 months of consistent saving, members can borrow up to five times their balance at low interest rates—a game-changer for those looking to purchase land or fund further education. The team also raised awareness for specialized emergency and education accounts designed to help parents manage school fees without financial stress.

The campus atmosphere was energetic as cadets engaged with the team regarding mobile banking and contribution structures. By bringing these services directly to the college in Madang, NSLS is providing maritime workers with a secure, formal path to wealth, helping them avoid high-interest informal lenders. As the industry grows, NSLS remains committed to ensuring every sailor and instructor in Madang has the tools to ‘Sevim Moni’ today to ‘Stretim Sindaun’ tomorrow.
